Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL), or recurrent miscarriage, is the spontaneous loss of two or more consecutive pregnancies, although some medical societies define it as three or more losses. Causes can include genetic abnormalities (often linked to maternal age), uterine structural issues, endocrine problems like thyroid disease, autoimmune disorders such as antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, and some lifestyle factors. A thorough physical exam, laboratory tests (including genetic and blood work), and imaging studies are used to identify a potential cause and guide treatment.
